Ink Swatch - Pennonia - Karpatzoid/Carpathian Green

This is my last fluorescent Pennonia sample, Pennonia Karpatzoid/Carpathian Green. This one is decent. It’s a nice “grassy” green. A little light but not overly so, at least with larger nibs. Still somewhat usable, and glows nicely under UV, getting more intense instead of changing colors. It is very faint, almost unreadable, in thin or dry nibs, so be aware of that limitation.

Scans

As with some of my other light/pale inks the scans come out a little darker than it appears to the eye.

Photos

Col-o-ring paper is very reactive to UV and the paper itself glows blue brightly, which makes the glow of the ink appear less intense. Iroful is mildly reactive to UV and glows a little. MD reacts very low so it shows off the glow of the ink the best.

A mix of UV and visible light seems to yield the best results to the eye.

Microscope

The microscope photos don’t reveal anything too surprising, mostly just hints of yellow/yellow-green that aren’t evident in photos. You can also see how it shades from “almost too light to read” to “definitely too light to read”.

Microscope UV

These photos show magnified portions of each swatch under visible light, a mix of visible and UV light, and UV light alone.

Microscope UV photos are a bit tricky since I have to dial the light up/down on the microscope and add UV light from a flashlight. As the UV light intensifies, it seems to play tricks with the microscope’s camera with the background to some extent.

On the col-o-ring photos the glow of the paper is overpowering the glow of the ink, so it mostly looks blue like the paper.

In the “mix” photos you can see the ink glows a bit, making it shine brighter than it did without UV. It glows a lot more intensely under UV alone.

In each case, paper interference aside, the color of the glow is consistent with the color of the ink, making it more intense rather than changing its appearance.

Chromatography

The chromatography separates out into a couple shades of light green but only at the very end.

Under UV the green near the end glows very brightly and there is a blue halo past the leading edge.

Verdict

I considered buying a bottle of this, but came to the conclusion that while it looks decent, it’s too light for my purposes.

Of the three Pennonia samples I bought, I like Napnyugta Sunset the most by far.
